WORLD RENOWNED DANISH ARCHITECT JAN GEHL DELIVERED THE ANNUAL WALTER BURLEY GRIFFIN MEMORIAL LECTURE
The annual Walter Burley Griffin Memorial Lecture has been delivered in Canberra since 1961 by a number of distinguished individuals from many fields of expertise. The Australian Institute of Architects and the Royal Danish Embassy have arranged for the 2009 Walter Burley Griffin Memorial Lecture to be presented by World renowned Danish architect Jan Gehl. Jan Gehl has been instrumental in creating walkable, sustainable cities around the world.
Jan Gehl has worked with the Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne governments and has been engaged by the City of Sydney to develop a Public Spaces and Public Life survey for the Sydney CBD.
Jan is an Architect MAA & FRIBA, Professor Emeritus of Urban Design at the School of Architecture in Copenhagen. For over 40 years his career has focused on improving the quality of urban life, especially for pedestrians, through his work as urban design adviser to Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, New York Washington, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and many more. His writings include the “Life Between Buildings” first published in 1971, a widely used handbook on the relationship between public spaces and the social life in cities, through to “New City Life”, published in 2006, and which responds to the challenges facing cities in the 21st century.
